The watchtower is the result of architect, Mary Colter, who was commissioned to do this project for the Fred Harvey Company and Santa Fe Railway. Mary had studied the round tower at Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde for the inspiration. The tower was built to bolster sagging ridership to the Grand Canyon in the Santa Fe Railway in the early 1930's.
